Germany has significantly stepped up its Leopard 1 tank deliveries to Ukraine in recent months, marking a substantial boost to the country’s armored capabilities. As per a Forbes report by journalist David Axe, Germany, alongside the Netherlands and Belgium, has notably increased its pace of supply since September 2024. Initially, it took 19 months from July 2023 to deliver the first 58 Leopard 1A5 tanks out of the promised 155, due to repair and parts sourcing issues. However, these hurdles now appear to be resolved, with 45 additional tanks delivered in a short span.
This rush of deliveries comes at a critical juncture, as the Ukrainian armed forces have been distributing their existing Western tanks—Challenger 2, M-1 Abrams, and Leopard 2—among their brigades. The Leopard 1, with its robust 105-mm gun and EMES-18 fire control system, arrives just in time to equip approximately 12 new brigades formed recently.
The Leopard 1A5, while dated, brings much-needed firepower and numbers to Ukraine’s tank force. While it may lack the protection of its heavier counterparts, Ukraine has bolstered its defenses by adding active protection blocks and drone defense netting. Of the 58 Leopard 1s delivered before September, only six were reported destroyed—a testament to their resilience and effective modifications.
Germany’s latest aid package to Ukraine, announced by UNIAN, included 15 Leopard 1A5 tanks, along with other military hardware like an IRIS-T SLM and IRIS-T SLS surface-to-air missile system, and Patriot launchers. Additionally, Ukrainian forces may soon benefit from the Skyranger 35 air defense system, based on the Leopard 1 chassis, as reported by Rheinmetall.
With Germany accelerating its Leopard 1 deliveries, Ukraine’s armored forces are poised for a significant transformation. The increased numbers and diverse capabilities of these tanks will strengthen Ukraine’s position as it continues to defend its borders and push back against ongoing aggression.
