In a remarkable turn of weather, the Rodopi village of Mанастир has been blanketed by a staggering meter of snow, making it the snowiest place in Bulgaria, according to data from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH). The village, perched at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters and with a population of around 50, is widely recognized as Bulgaria’s highest permanently inhabited settlement.
The heavy snowfall began overnight and continued into the morning, rendering the road from the nearest town, Lъки, almost impassable. A team from the Aсеновград fire station spent the night clearing fallen trees, but the snow continues to cause issues, leading to power outages in the region.
NOVA’s team was the first to breach the snow barrier on December 27, driving through the village. The journey required the clearing of trees and branches along the way, demonstrating the resilience of local communities in the face of harsh winters.
"It’s not every day you see snow this deep," said Ivan, our local guide. "We’re used to heavy snows, but this is exceptional even for us."
This phenomenal snowfall comes on the heels of weather warnings issued for the country, predicting strong winds and a sharp drop in temperatures. The relentless snow and cold have left many villagers praying for an improvement in conditions and a swift resolution to the power outages.
