God of War remains one of the most important sagas within the PlayStation ecosystem, so it’s reasonable to expect multiple projects in development. Beyond the titles announced in February, Santa Monica Studio also appears to be working on an original proposal that will expand this fictional universe.

The last main installment in the franchise, Ragnarök, was released in 2022, once again putting Kratos and his son Atreus in the spotlight. Since then, fans have been wondering what’s next for the former Ghost of Sparta.

The God of War Universe Will Expand with a “New Franchise”

The next game from Cory Barlog, director of the acclaimed 2018 game, has yet to be revealed. Previous reports suggested a completely original science fiction adventure, but more recent information indicates those rumors are “absurd.” The mystery remains, but a new clue allows us to speculate on what it might be.

First discovered by the ResetEra community, it seems a former developer let slip information ahead of time. Through a post on her personal LinkedIn profile, Lauren Signorino, a former senior writer at Sony Santa Monica Studio, revealed she worked on “a new franchise” that is part of the God of War universe.

The writer, who was part of the company remotely between August 2020 and September 2025, notes that she developed characters, plots and an original story that expands the acclaimed intellectual property. She also revealed that her work contributed to the “long-term narrative and franchise strategy.”

Lauren Signorino, a former writer at Santa Monica Studio, reveals she worked on a “new franchise” that will expand the God of War universe.

“I helped define the narrative vision and creative direction at Sony Santa Monica Studio for a new franchise within the God of War universe, by developing characters, plots, and an original story that expanded the acclaimed intellectual property. I integrated the story with gameplay and world-building through scripting and narrative content, and collaborated with different disciplines to deliver emotional experiences to a global audience.”

Lauren Signorino’s post is believed to refer to Cory Barlog’s new, mysterious project; however, neither PlayStation nor Sony have responded to these statements, so the information should be taken as a rumor in the absence of an official confirmation.

The Future of God of War Looks Bright

While the specific secret video game from Santa Monica Studio is unknown, the former writer’s statements align with previous claims from journalist Jason Schreier, who said that Cory Barlog’s next title is not a new intellectual property, but feels like one.

In a recent report on the sudden closure of Bluepoint Games, the Bloomberg editor also mentioned that Sony intends to expand the world of God of War with “several sequels and spin-offs, like its own smaller-scale Marvel Cinematic Universe.” It’s worth remembering that the studio that handled the remake of Demon’s Souls worked on a canceled game-as-a-service title from the franchise.

Regarding what the next video game from Santa Monica Studio might be, previous rumors suggested a new adventure set in Egyptian mythology. Only time will notify.

What we do know is coming is a remake of the original trilogy of God of War. Santa Monica Studio confirmed that this project is in its early stages of production, so the release is still some time away. Sons of Sparta, a 2D spin-off, debuted in mid-February, receiving mixed reviews.
