Google has rolled back an AI image-generation tool in Google Earth less than 24 hours after its launch, following user uploads of policy-violating scenarios and warnings from researchers over disinformation risks tied to manipulated satellite imagery.
Alphabet’s Google quietly walked back its newest mapping feature on Friday, July 31, pulling a tool that let users generate photorealistic visualizations directly on top of satellite, aerial, and 3D mapping data according to Reuters reporting. The feature, powered by Google’s Nano Banana 2 artificial intelligence model, was unveiled on Thursday, July 30. It allowed anyone on the web to zoom into a location, tap a button, and type out a text prompt to render custom imagery as detailed by Indiatimes.
The Quick Rollout and Immediate Policy Breaches
When product manager Bryan Horowitz introduced the capability, he pitched it as a direct extension of user imagination. The initial company announcement stated, Just zoom in to a place in Google Earth on web (sic), tap ‘create image,’ and type whatever you want to see.
That open-ended generation capability instantly ran into trouble. Within hours, users began sharing screenshots of generated imagery across social media platforms. While Google noted that the tool had legitimate applications for geospatial professionals, the company acknowledged that the public output quickly crossed lines.
“We’ve seen geospatial professionals using this feature for a range of useful purposes, however we’ve also seen people sharing screenshots of generated imagery that appear to violate our policies. So we’re rolling back this feature in Google Earth while we work on implementing stronger guardrails.”

Africk pointed out that these updates make it easier to generate convincing fake satellite imagery that can spread rapidly online, mislead the public, and ultimately erode trust in genuine overhead photography while complicating the work of journalists and researchers.
Industry-Wide AI Adjustments and Watermark Protections
The rapid retreat by Google mirrors a broader industry pattern where major technology firms roll out experimental generative features only to scale them back following swift public backlash and regulatory anxiety. Meta similarly discontinued its Muse Image tool earlier this month after facing intense criticism from privacy advocates and a Hollywood union over public Instagram data scraping according to Reuters.
In response to ongoing criticism regarding verification, Google emphasized its reliance on invisible digital markers to help users track manipulated media. Company representatives noted that every image produced by the Nano Banana model carries a SynthID watermark, which can be checked using the Gemini app or Google Lens as Indiatimes detailed. Google stated that it prevents generation on harmful topics and continues to refine its automated protections while the Google Earth feature remains paused.
