Guatemala Dispatches 150 Troops to Help Combat Gangs in Haiti
In a significant show of international support, Guatemala has deployed a contingent of 150 troops to Haiti to assist in the ongoing fight against gang violence, which has plagued the Caribbean nation in recent months. The troops, part of Guatemala’s military, left their home country on Monday, marking the beginning of what is expected to be a crucial collaborative effort to quell the escalating lawlessness.
The deployment comes at the request of Haiti’s interim Prime Minister Aimé-Nicholas Texture, who expressed gratitude for Guatemala’s assistance. "We appreciate Guatemala’s support in our endeavour to restore security and stability in Haiti," he stated. This is not the first time Guatemala has lent its military support to Haiti; in the past, it has assisted in peacekeeping missions led by the United Nations.
The 150 troops will join an international coalition of soldiers and police officers already on the ground in Haiti, including contingents from Chile, Argentina, and the United States. The mission is a joint venture between the United Nations and the Core Group, a body comprising Brazil, Canada, the European Union, Germany, Spain, the United States, and the Organization of American States.
The situation in Haiti has Parallels with a gang war that gripped Guatemala a decade ago. That experience could provide valuable insights as the Guatemalan troops strive to help their Haitian counterparts gain the upper hand against the marauding gangs.
However, the challenge in Haiti is immense. The country is grappling with a perfect storm of political instability following the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, economic hardship, and a severe absence of state authority, particularly in the capital, Port-au-Prince, where many of the gangs operate.
