Guus Luijters, Iconic Amsterdam Chronicle, Dies at 82
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Guus Luijters, the irascible and beloved chronicler of Amsterdam’s underbelly and its colorful characters, has passed away. He was 82.
Luijters, a prolific journalist and author, was known for his regular column ‘Luijters Loop’ in Het Parool, where he provided a unique perspective on the Dutch capital’s quirks, history, and scandals. His insightful, often humorous, and always opinionated chronicles painted a vivid picture of Amsterdam’s social fabric.
Born in 1943, Luijters began his journalistic career at Het Parool in 1965. His first column, ‘Algemene Versechelde Misbruik’ (General Vague Misuse), appeared in 1968 and launched his iconic, no-nonsense style. Luijters’ work was a blend of reportage, personal anecdotes, and social commentary, masterfully interwoven with his distinctive wit.
Luijters was also a best-selling author, penning numerous books filled with Amsterdam trivia, biography, and history, including the acclaimed ‘Jij bent Amsterdam’ (You Are Amsterdam) and ‘Amsterdam Loopt!’ (Amsterdam Walks!). His work earned him several prestigious awards, including the P.C. Hooft Award in 2015.
In 2019, Luijters announced his retirement from Het Parool, bringing an end to nearly five decades of his unique commentary. His final column, titled ‘Acte de Naissance’ (Birth Certificate), bidding farewell to his readers, was a poignant reminder of his enduring legacy.
Despite his retirement, Luijters continued to write occasionally, his voice echoing through the city he so dearly loved. His passing leaves a void in Amsterdam’s literary landscape, but his work serves as a testament to his enduring love for, and dedication to, his city.
As the tributes pour in, one thing is clear: Guus Luijters, the quintessential Amsterdam chronicler, will be deeply missed. Yet, his spirit lives on in every street, canal, and corner he wrote about, and in the hearts of the millions who read his words.
