Growing Concern: Rise in Unwanted Pregnancies Predicted
A Belgian gynaecologist has raised alarm bells, warning of a potential increase in unwanted pregnancies. Dr.Els Famynn, a leading specialist in the country, attributes this trend to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on sexual health services.
"The pandemic has disrupted contraception services," Dr. Famynn explained in an interview with Gazet van Antwerpen. "Lockdowns and safety measures have led to the closure or reduced capacity of sexual health clinics, making it difficult for people to access contraceptives."
Moreover, the shift to telehealth consultations may have exacerbated the issue. While convenient, telemedicine can pose barriers to discussing sensitive topics like contraception, leading to missed opportunities for advice and support.
"This is a worrying trend," Dr. Famynn cautioned. "We’re seeing a decrease in the use of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), like implants and IUDs, which are highly effective and convenient."
The concern is echoed by international health organizations. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) estimates that if lockdowns continue for six months, there could be an additional 7 million unwanted pregnancies worldwide due to reduced access to sexual and reproductive health services.
To tackle this issue, healthcare providers are advocating for essential sexual health services to remain accessible and affordable during crises. This includes prioritizing contraceptive care, and ensuring that services are adaptable, safe, and non-judgmental.
"The pandemic has highlighted the crucial need for resilient sexual and reproductive health services," Dr. Famynn concluded. "We must learn from this and ensure we’re better prepared for the future."
