Title: Dutch Minister Halsema: No Official Invitations to Israeli Cabinet Members
In a departure from previous Dutch governments, Minister of Foreign Affairs Wopke Halsema has stated that she will not proactively invite or officially receive Israeli cabinet ministers. This shift in policy was revealed in a letter sent to the Dutch parliament on Thursday, March 24.
Halsema, a member of the centrist D66 party, explained that this change is part of her ministry’s efforts to align with human rights organizations’ recommendations and to comply with international law. The Dutch government is expected to adopt a more critical stance towards Israel, focusing on its occupation of the Palestinian territories and the construction of settlements.
The minister emphasized that this stance does not imply a deterioration in the Netherlands’ relationship with Israel. Instead, it reflects a heightened focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the need for both parties to engage in meaningful peace negotiations. Halsema’s letter did not specify whether she would still meet with Israeli ministers in other capacities or under different circumstances.
The Dutch government’s new approach has been criticized by some within the Netherland’s Jewish community, who argue that it singles out Israel unfairly. Others have applauded the move, seeing it as a principled stance in support of Palestinian rights.
This change in policy comes amid a broader EU effort to hold Israel accountable for its actions in the Palestinian territories. In recent years, several EU countries have taken steps to differentiate their relations with Israel and the settlements, including labeling settlement goods and advising against investing in settlement-related activities.
The Dutch parliament had requested clarification on the government’s stance towards Israel following the unveiling of its new coalition agreement earlier this year. In her letter, Halsema reassured parliamentarians that the Netherlands remains committed to a two-state solution and will continue to engage with both Israel and the Palestinian Authority to that end.
