Korean Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) is actively expanding cooperation on small modular reactors (SMRs) with key Asian nations like Thailand and India, laying the groundwork for increased overseas market penetration.

From March 5th to 6th, KHNP co-hosted the ‘KHNP-EGAT SMR Technology Seminar’ in Bangkok, Thailand, with the Thai national power company, EGAT.

The seminar, built upon a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by both organizations in June of last year, aimed to solidify technical collaboration. Approximately 80 experts from both countries – including representatives from Thailand’s energy ministry, regulatory bodies, industry, and academia – discussed Thailand’s SMR deployment conditions and potential avenues for cooperation.

Advancing SMR Technology Through Collaboration

Presentations during the seminar covered energy policies in both Korea and Thailand, the technical specifications and development status of innovative SMRs (i-SMRs), safety analyses, and supply chain strategies. Korean companies including Korea Electric Power Technology, the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Hanwha Nuclear Fuel, and Doosan Enerbility participated in technical exchange sessions covering reactor design, fuel, and component supply.

Prior to the Thailand engagement, KHNP strengthened SMR cooperation in India. On March 3rd, KHNP and Tata Power, India’s largest private power company, jointly held an ‘i-SMR Technology Workshop’ in Mumbai.

The workshop focused on sharing energy policies between Korea and India, exploring the technical features and development status of i-SMRs, and discussing potential collaboration regarding components and fuel. A ‘Team Korea’ delegation showcased the technological prowess of the Korean nuclear industry across design, fuel, and equipment.

India’s Ambitious Nuclear Expansion Plans

India is pursuing a plan to increase its nuclear power capacity to 100GW by 2047 and is considering converting sites of aging coal-fired power plants into energy hubs centered around nuclear power. KHNP believes that i-SMRs, with their compact modular design and enhanced safety features, represent a viable solution for transitioning away from coal.

KHNP Export Business Headquarters Executive Director Park In-sik stated, “Technical exchanges in Thailand and India have significantly strengthened the foundation for SMR cooperation in the Asian market. We will continue to expand collaboration with local partners to actively explore SMR business opportunities in ASEAN and India.”
