Heatwave to Persist Next Week With Temperatures Hitting 29°C

by Rachel Morgan News Editor

The alert covers Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, Mayo, Kilkenny, Laois, and Offaly, with temperatures expected to peak at 29 degrees. The prolonged heatwave has prompted Uisce Éireann to urge public water conservation due to historically low reservoir levels.

Temperature Warnings and Forecast

The current Status Yellow warning remains in effect for the 10 listed counties until 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14. A secondary, overlapping high-temperature warning for Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Galway, and Mayo is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 13, and will continue until 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15. Met Éireann has confirmed that a broader weather advisory for the entire country is active from July 8 through July 17.

Monday’s forecast indicates temperatures between 24 and 29 degrees across Munster and Connacht, while Leinster and Ulster will see highs of 20 to 24 degrees. Forecasters expect the warm spell to persist through the week, with daytime temperatures widely reaching the mid-to-high 20s. Residents may experience warm or tropical nights, though Met Éireann notes an increased probability of showers and thunderstorms developing as the week progresses.

Water Supply Under Pressure

Uisce Éireann reports that treated water reservoirs are at historically low levels, a consequence of increased domestic and garden consumption during the heatwave. The utility has identified several areas under particular pressure, including the greater Dublin area, Wexford, West Cork, Kilkenny, South Tipperary, and West Donegal.

Several counties are already subject to night-time water restrictions as a result of these low levels. Officials are calling for immediate public cooperation to reduce water usage to ensure supply stability across the affected regions.

Outlook for Mid-Week

Tuesday is expected to remain largely dry with widespread sunshine and temperatures between 23 and 28 degrees. While the west will likely see the highest temperatures, conditions near the east coast may be slightly cooler due to a moderate easterly breeze. By Wednesday, while dry and sunny conditions are expected to prevail for most, the likelihood of heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms increases, particularly in the south and west. Temperatures on Wednesday are forecast to remain in the 23 to 28-degree range.
