Title: 2024 in Retrospect: A Year of Darkness and Irony
As the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2024, few would have predicted that the subsequent 12 months would be dominated by chaos, violence, and a descent into the abyss. In hindsight, 2024 stands out as a year that could be summarized with one word: darkness.
A grim milestone reached
The year started with an alarming statistic: more than 1.2 million people have died in school shootings since records began. While this figure is chilling enough, the irony of Donald Trump being nearly assassinated by a mentally unstable individual has only served to underscore the political exploitation of this decades-long tragedy. As the former president-elect enters his fourth term, gun control advocates are left mourning the loss of countless lives and the failure of leadership.
A frozen conflict
While the war in Ukraine appeared to be underway since 2014, 2024 marked a turning point. Initially predicted to be a short and decisive victory for Russia, the conflict has become a protracted and costly affair. The United States’ decision to suspend military aid to Ukraine, driven by Republican influence in Congress, has enabled Putin to consolidate gains. Now, with Trump’s return to the White House, Ukraine’s NATO allies have cause for concern regarding potential troop withdrawal and the alliance’s eastward expansion.
A Europe braced for war
From Sweden to Finland, Europe’s northern neighbors are no longer dismissing the threat of Russia’s aggressive expansion. Governments are issuing defensive guidelines and preparing their citizens for the worst. The chill of war is creeping closer to home.
Dictatorship 2.0
In a stunning turn of events, North Korea has lent military support to Russia’s war effort. With 100,000 troops dispatched, Kim Jong-un has given Putin a valuable lifeline, allowing the Russian president to offload casualties onto Pyongyang’s soldiers. While this gesture has bolstered Russia’s military, it has raised alarming questions about the international solidarity of rogue states.
Across the region, democratic fragility is on display. In South Korea, a nascent coup attempt was thwarted, and in Georgia, Europe’s easternmost state, democratic backsliding continues. As for the United States, many are left wondering if it, too, may soon face internal unrest.
A Middle East ablaze
In the Middle East, Israel’s unchecked military efforts in Gaza have emboldened Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to launch military strikes across the region. From Lebanon to Syria, Israel’s aggressive tactics have met with little international repercussions, as US presidential leniency has emboldened Israeli extremism.
Meanwhile, Syria’s political future is uncertain. With Bashar al-Assad’s sudden fall from power, a power vacuum has emerged. While there’s hope for a democratic transition, the rise of ISIS or factional violence remains a genuine fear.
Foreboding horizons
As the new year approached, several developments raised the specter of further global instability. Russia’s potential return to Ukraine could see Putin reclaim lost territory, while Israel’s expansionist ambitions in Syria threaten to exacerbate regional tensions.
In an outrageous display of FIFA’s desperation for cash, Saudi Arabia was awarded the 2034 World Cup. Under the regime of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, the kingdom has been accused of human rights abuses, including the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. One cannot help but wonder if FIFA has given up any last shreds of moral integrity in pursuit of profit.
As the curtain fell on 2024, the world found itself in a dark, bitter, and seemingly irreversible state. However, we must endeavor to grasp at the fading embers of hope for 2025, and not allow the ironies and injustices of the past year to define what’s yet to come.
