Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Indonesia: What You Need to Know
Jakarta, Tempo.co – Amidst headlines of the novel Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19), another virus has entered the spotlight – the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, has reassured the public that this is not a new threat, but rather a known virus that has been circulating in Indonesia for years.
What is HMPV?
HMPV is a common virus that causes respiratory infections, particularly in children and the elderly. Unlike COVID-19, which is a new virus, HMPV has been known to the medical community since 2001 and has been circulating globally since then without causing significant concern.
Symptoms and Transmission
HMPV symptoms are similar to that of the common flu – cough, fever, runny nose, and shortness of breath. Most people recover without needing special medical care. It spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, similar to other flu viruses.
Is HMPV Harmful?
While HMPV can cause severe illness in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, it is generally not life-threatening. According to Minister Budi, "It’s like the common flu; you can recover on your own."
Who is at Risk?
Although HMPV is not typically dangerous, certain groups should take extra precautions:
- Young children, especially those under 5 years old
- Older adults, aged 65 years and above
- Individuals with weakened immune systems or chronic health conditions
Prevention and Care
Preventing HMPV infections is similar to preventing the flu:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze.
- Avoid close contact with sick people.
- If you have symptoms, stay home and rest. If symptoms are severe, consult a healthcare provider.
Minister Budi emphasizes, "Maintain a healthy lifestyle, get enough rest, and see a doctor immediately if you experience any suspicious symptoms."
