Bulgarian Capital’s Central Station Hit by Fatal Fire, Four Homeless Die in Train Car
In a tragedy that unfolded early Tuesday morning, a fire at Sofia‘s central railway station claimed the lives of four homeless individuals seeking shelter in a train car overnight. The Bulgarian news agency Novinite reported the incident, which also left two more people severely injured.
The blaze erupted around 2:30 AM local time, according to the arresting report from the prosecution authority. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, which is believed to have started due to careless handling of an open flame inside the train carriage, as suggested by Vesselin Getov, the chief of Sofia’s fire department.
Two men have been detained in connection with the incident, although the specific charges against them remain unclear at this time, according to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.
The tragedy highlights the pressing issue of homelessness in Bulgaria, where hundreds of people continue to live on the streets despite the cold winter temperatures. As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, the plight of Sofia’s homeless population remains a pressing concern for local authorities and charitable organizations.
