Latvian singer Laima Vaikule has quit smoking after four decades, according to an interview published by the magazine “Privātā Dzīve” and reported by journalists Lauma Lapsa and Marta Kalniņa. Vaikule started smoking at age 40 and successfully stopped four months ago at age 72, utilizing self-reflection to break the habit.
How Laima Vaikule Quit Smoking After Decades
According to Vaikule’s statements in “Privātā Dzīve,” the decision came because the habit had “become too crazy.” She relied on a conversation with herself to finally drop cigarettes. “It finally had to be done, otherwise it was already getting crazy. Stopping was helped by a conversation with myself,” the singer stated in the interview.
To cope with the sudden cessation, Vaikule permitted herself to eat whenever the urge to smoke arose. Because she was determined to quit at all costs, she avoided placing strict limitations on her diet during the initial phase. “Every time I wanted to smoke, I ate something. That’s not right. But since I had decided to quit smoking at all costs, I didn’t restrict myself too much,” Vaikule explained.

Managing Lifestyle Changes and Stage Costumes
The unconstrained eating habits led to physical changes that impacted her professional wardrobe. Vaikule noted that she became sturdier, creating a specific challenge when organizing her stage outfits. “I have become sturdier, that is a big problem for me because I have to think twice about how to put together stage costumes,” she said.
To address the weight gain, Vaikule adjusted her daily routine. According to the singer, she modified her eating habits to consume food only once a day, in the morning. This dietary shift accompanies an active fitness regimen that includes regular exercise, cycling, and walking her dog three times daily. “Now I have changed my eating habits and eat only once and in the morning. Of course, just like before, I still regularly exercise in everyday life — I do gymnastics and ride a bike. Another physical activity is walking the dog, which we go on three times a day,” Vaikule told “Privātā Dzīve.”
