Ice-Slicked Streets Cause Surge in Injuries; Hospitals Cope with Wave of Fractures
Slippery roads on Friday morning left emergency services scrambling to manage an influx of accidents, with many cyclists ending up in hospitals across the region with broken bones.
"We were kept busy all morning," said a spokesperson for the Jeroen Bosch Hospital in Den Bosch. By mid-morning, they had already treated nine patients who had fallen victim to the icy conditions, including several broken limbs, a hip fracture, and a head wound.
By 3:30 PM, the number of patients had climbed to 26. "Most of them fell off their bikes," the spokesperson said. "We’re seeing a lot of broken wrists, ankles, and shoulders. A few also sustained head wounds or concussions."
Meanwhile, the Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital in Tilburg reported a similar surge, treating 27 patients with broken bones due to slips and falls on ice. "We’re seeing mainly broken wrists and ankles," a hospital spokesperson confirmed.
The police also witnessed an increase in accidents involving cyclists slipping on ice, in addition to reports of skidding cars. "We received quite a few calls about people falling off their bikes and hurting themselves," a police spokesperson said. "Gladness was a common factor in many incidents today."
However, not all hospitals were equally affected. At the Amphia Hospital in Breda, a spokesperson reported that while it was busy, the increased patient load was primarily due to illness, not ice-related injuries.
With winter in full swing, authorities remind residents to take extra care on icy roads to prevent further accidents.
