IDF Maps Homes in Tel for Demolition Following Fatal West Bank Shooting
Israeli forces moved swiftly over the weekend, entering the village of Tel on Saturday to map the houses of two suspects. The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the operation on Sunday, setting the stage for the sealing and demolition of the properties.
The action directly follows a violent confrontation on Friday that left two members of the military dead: 27-year-old Maj. Yuval Ezra and 32-year-old Chief Sgt. First Class (res.) Benayahu Melet.
The Deadly Friday Clash Inside Palestinian Authority Territory
According to the military, the bloodshed began when a group of Israeli civilians illegally crossed into Palestinian Authority-controlled territory while hiking. Palestinians confronted the hikers, pelting them with rocks before gunfire erupted.
Security forces rushed to the scene on Friday, immediately exchanging fire with the suspected attackers. Saturday’s follow-up operation targeted two specific residences in Tel: the home of the terrorist who carried out the shooting, and the home of the individual who stole the weapon used in the assault.
Contradictory Narratives Emerge From the Village
Sharply conflicting accounts now surround the sequence of events that provoked the violence.
The Palestinian Authority’s Health Ministry reported that at least four Palestinians were killed and four others wounded, noting that three of the injured remain in critical condition. A distinctly different version of events came from Essam Saifi, a local Fatah leader, who spoke with Reuters.
Saifi claimed that roughly 25 to 30 Israeli settlers initially entered the region, attacked residents, and tried to break into two homes. He stated that local residents confronted the settlers, at which point the settlers opened fire.
Punitive Demolitions and Heightened Security Deployments
The completion of the mapping phase signals that home demolitions are imminent as the IDF responds to the deaths of Maj. Yuval Ezra and Chief Sgt. First Class (res.) Benayahu Melet.
Further operational updates from the military are expected regarding the exact timeline for the targeted demolitions, even as local tensions remain severe in the wake of the disputed accounts.
