Six Bulgarian MPs Face Impeachment Proceedings Over Alleged Crimes

Bulgaria’s Chief Prosecutor, Borislav Saratov, has submitted a request to the 51st National Assembly to strip the immunity of six Members of Parliament (MPs) from various political parties. The move comes at the recommendation of Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office (SCPO) and Sofia Regional Prosecutor’s Office (SRPO).

  • Radoslav Vasilev (MEP) – His immunity is sought to resume a 2023 coercion case against him at Sofia City Court ( SCC), which was halted due to his parliamentary immunity.

  • Veselin Veшев and AngelGeorgiev (Vazrazhdane) – Both face charges for hooliganism and assaulting police officers in a 2021 incident during a protest against water shortage in Pernik. The criminal case was suspended due to their immunities.

"We’re not worried about this for the third time. The case is entirely political and fabricated. It’s because we were protesting against severe water shortage in Pernik and police responded by maltreating us", Georgiev commented.

  • LenkaBorislavova (PP-DB) – Her immunity is sought over allegations of forgery in relation to documents from "Save the Corals" Association. Prosecutors claim she used forged signatures to terminate Kyril Petkov’s membership in the organization.

  • Guenay Dalolu (DPS-Nievo vreme) – Dalolu’s immunity is sought over allegations of vote buying ahead of the 49th National Assembly elections. Prosecutors claim he threatened to withhold 20 preferences if his demand for support was not met.

"Our colleague will immediately give up his immunity. We are not afraid of investigations. There should be an independent judicial power", commented leader of DPS-Nievo vreme, Delyan Peevski.

  • Mario Rangelov (Democracy, Rights and Freedoms – DPS) – Rangelov’s immunity is sought over allegations of manipulating political rights during the last parliamentary elections. Prosecutors claim he organized vote-buying schemes in Pleven and Koynaare, distributing bribes of BGN 15,000 among voters.

The decision to strip these MPs of their immunity will now be considered by Parliament. If approved, it will pave the way for the resumption or continuation of criminal proceedings against them.
