Carney Turns Down Liberal Cabinet Role; Dominic LeBlanc Confirms

Headline: Ex-Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney Will Not Join Trudeau’s Cabinet

Former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney will not be part of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet, according to Canada’s new Minister of Finance, Dominic LeBlanc. In an interview with the New Brunswick newspaper Telegraph Journal, LeBlanc confirmed that discussions with Carney to assume the role of Finance Minister have concluded, stating that Carney is "not an option."

Trudeau had been attempting to recruit the prominent economist for the position up until recently. LeBlanc’s appointment to the Finance Ministry comes after the surprising resignation of Chrystia Freeland just hours before she was set to deliver her economic update. In the aftermath, Ottawa officials worked swiftly to find a replacement.

LeBlanc, who currently holds the post of Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, will relinquish his role as Minister of Public Safety in the upcoming cabinet shuffle. The Minister of Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, was reportedly offered the position of Finance Minister but declined, preferring to remain at his current post. According to Radio-Canada/CBC, Champagne was the next in line for succession as per a routine decree by the cabinet.
