Article:
At around 12:01 PM on the first day of Christmas, Estlink 2 cable was disconnected from the power grid, announced Finnish state-owned company Fingrid. Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo confirmed an investigation into the incident, stating, "Authorities are ready and investigating the event. The disruption will not impact Finland’s access to power."
While Fingrid is exploring the possibility of sabotage, no evidence of any such activity on land has been found. Arto Pahkin from Fingrid told Finnish broadcaster Yle that while sabotage cannot be ruled out, vandalism is also a possibility. "We are looking at the situation holistically and will inform you about the cause of the fault once we know what it is," Pahkin added.
The Estlink 2 cable, which runs from Finland to Estonia across the Baltic Sea, had been back in operation since September after being out of service since early 2024 due to a malfunction. There was no suspicion of sabotage in that case.
In recent months, there have been multiple incidents involving damaged undersea cables in the Baltic Sea. In November, a Chinese ship was stopped by the Danish navy for suspicion of involvement in cable tampering. Sweden later reported that China had refused access to the ship for investigations, according to The Guardian. Previous incidents of damaged cables in the Baltic Sea have also been reported.
