An Islamabad judicial magistrate on Thursday granted post-arrest bail to Dr. Nadir Hussain, a urologist accused of participating in an illegal kidney transplant network. Magistrate Ahmad Shahzad Gondal ordered the release of the Quaid-i-Azam International Hospital doctor against surety bonds of Rs100,000, ruling that the case against him requires further inquiry and that no active role had prima facie emerged at this stage of the investigation.
How the case against the doctor unfolded
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested Dr. Nadir last month following an investigation into the Premium Diagnostic Center in Islamabad’s G-8 Markaz. According to the FIR, the agency conducted a raid on May 16 alongside representatives from the Human Organ and Tissue Authority (HOTA) and local police. During the operation, authorities detained several individuals, including alleged donors Muhammad Sajjad and Muhammad Sanwal, technician Aamir Khan, rider Rahimullah, and intermediaries Muhammad Imtiaz and Sabra Bibi. Investigators allege the network promised donors Rs600,000 each for kidneys and conducted preliminary medical screenings at the diagnostic center. While reports suggest the network may have facilitated up to 187 illegal procedures, these claims remain untested in court.
Why the court granted bail
In his ruling, Magistrate Gondal noted that the primary allegation against Dr. Nadir involved the referral of prospective donors for medical testing in 2024. The court observed that the investigation phase is complete and the accused is no longer required for interrogation. Defence counsel argued that the doctor was falsely implicated based solely on the statements of co-accused individuals, and that no material evidence linked him to illegal transplant activities. The court distinguished Dr. Nadir’s role from other suspects whose bail applications were previously rejected, finding that his continued detention would serve no useful purpose.
What happens next in the legal proceedings
While Dr. Nadir has secured bail, the legal challenges regarding his status are ongoing. An Islamabad sessions court has issued a notice to the doctor regarding a petition seeking the cancellation of his bail. Additional Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka has directed the accused to respond to this petition, with further proceedings scheduled for June 29, 2026. The FIA maintains that its investigation into the roles of all named suspects remains active, meaning the legal status of the accused could change depending on the outcome of the upcoming sessions court hearing and the ongoing evidentiary review.
