Islamophobia: Europe’s New Anti-Semitism?

**Title: "A Parallel History? Europe‘s Muslim Community Faces Alarming Resonance of Anti-Semitism"

In a provocative essay published in The Guardian, Brussels-based commentator Shada Islam underscores a troubling similarity between the treatment of Europe’s Muslims today and the historic experience of European Jews. With approximately 25 million Muslims residing in Europe, Islam argues that the community faces widespread generalizations and prejudices that echo anti-Semitic tropes of the past.**

Islam contends that Muslims are often collectively accused of being religiously driven, easily influenced by extremism, living in parallel societies, and subjecting women to patriarchal oppression. She argues that European governments’ persistent demand for "integration" is vague and often used to control and discipline Muslims, without clearly defining what "European values" actually entail.

Europe’s Muslims are increasingly met with a more virulent rhetoric, particularly following recent tensions between Israel and Hamas. Indeed, a 2024 report by the EU’s Fundamental Rights Agency revealed that nearly half of Europe’s Muslims have experienced discrimination based on religion, race, or ethnicity. More disturbingly, Islam notes that "well-integrated" Muslims are now also under suspicion—a distinction no longer drawn between "good" and "bad" Muslimsbut also those thriving in mainstream society.

"Even highly educated Muslims holding prominent positions or working at universities are now viewed as potentially hostile to the West," Islam asserts, citing Dutch commentator Wierd Duk.

Historic Parallels: "Europe’s New Jews"?

Drawing parallels with Europe’s historical treatment of Jews, Islam posits that Muslims are becoming the new "others" in Europe. Farid Hafez, an Austrian political scientist, is quoted as saying, "Now it’s Muslims who are accused of not fitting in, just as Jews once were."

Shaza Alrihawi, a human rights activist, echoes this sentiment: "It feels like we are Europe’s new Jews." This chilling comparison underscores the gravity of the situation, resonating with historical precedents that have ended tragically in the past.
