Supergroup Origins and Band Name Formation
Voleva formed in 2021 following the release of their debut single “I Came to Take You,” according to the primary source announcement. Vocalist Nikolay Vodenicharov-Niketsa, known from his appearance on The Voice of Bulgaria where Lechev serves as a judge, wrote both the music and lyrics for the track. The 70-year-old virtuoso Ivan Lechev recorded the guitar parts and recruited Rosen Vatev on drums. According to reporting from bTV’s Pred obed cited by BgDnes.bg, Vatev noted that things clicked naturally within this musical formation. The band officially adopted the name Voleva three years later during the video shoot for their second song, “Here I Am.” Ivan Lechev suggested the moniker by combining the first two letters of each member’s surname.
Musical Background of Voleva’s Lineup
Following their debut, drummer Rosen Vatev took over as the primary composer and arranger for the band, as detailed in the event records. Vatev grew up in a family of drummers and previously played with groups such as Saфо, Tube Hedzzz, Bobo & The Gang, and Animacionerite. In 2016, Vatev and Jeremy? were selected by Brian May and Roger Taylor to support Queen on their European tour spanning Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria. Vatev has also served as the drummer for Lili Ivanova’s musical ensemble for the past 15 years.
Vocalist Nikolay Vodenicharov-Niketsa began his career with Casual Threesome and Lisitsata i Kotaratsite, reaching the semifinals of The Voice of Bulgaria in 2019. Two years later, he debuted at the Plovdiv Opera as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, and he began playing George Berger in the musical Hair last year. BgDnes.bg notes that creating the track “Here I Am” served as a deep personal challenge for Vodenicharov, who drew from his poem “And I Came to Take You” for the lyrics. The accompanying music video was directed by Vasil Stefanov and Stefka Nikolova.
