In a joint interview with The Guardian, Jane Leeves and David Hyde Pierce reflect on their roles as Daphne Moon and Niles Crane on the sitcom Frasier and the enduring friendship they have maintained since the show ended 22 years ago.
The actors described an immediate connection upon meeting during the pilot. Leeves recalled approaching Hyde Pierce “like a mad fan” because she had previously watched him in the series The Powers That Be, a Washington-DC-based show in which he played a mumbling, suicidal congressman. She stated that she perceived a “calmness, a kindness and an intellect” in him that she found “devastatingly sexy.”
Chemistry on and off screen
Hyde Pierce noted that he felt the two were “kindred spirits,” a sentiment he believes extended to the entire cast. He recalled a pre-pilot photoshoot where Leeves suggested there could be “just a little something” between their characters, leading to a pose where they leaned on one another. Leeves noted she was pulling his tie during the shoot, which Hyde Pierce said he liked.

The pair’s real-life bond has persisted long after the series finale. Hyde Pierce is the godfather to Leeves’ son and attended her wedding in England, during which he was involved in a “near fatal car accident.” For the interview, Leeves joined from her kitchen in Malibu while Hyde Pierce joined from a New York study featuring a bookcase.
Reflecting on Niles and Daphne
The interview revisits the “will-they-won’t-they” dynamic of their characters, which spanned seven seasons. The narrative arc followed the “snooty” psychiatrist Niles Crane as he harbored a long-term crush on Daphne Moon, his father’s physio. The relationship culminated in the characters leaving together in a Winnebago after Daphne learned the truth about Niles’ feelings the night before her wedding to another man.

The actors looked back at memorable episodes, including “A Mid-Winter Night’s Dream,” where the pair were trapped in Niles’ candlelit home during a storm with a broken glockenspiel. They also recalled “Moon Dance,” which featured a passionate tango following the divorce of Niles, accompanied by his exclamation, “Oh mama, I’ve got it all!”
Actors Build Lasting Marriages After Hit Show
Both actors are now in long-term marriages. Leeves has been married to TV executive Marshall Coben for 30 years, a relationship that was predicted by co-star John Mahoney in the show’s green room. Leeves remembers telling Mahoney she intended to adopt children, to which he replied, “Do not do that now. Within a year, you will meet someone.” Leeves subsequently met Coben at a Paramount party. Hyde Pierce married writer-producer Brian Hargrove in 2008 after they had been together for 25 years.
Recalling their first meeting, Hyde Pierce joked about Leeves’ enthusiastic greeting, saying, “I thought: I can’t believe Paramount Studios doesn’t have security.” He added that he realized he “lucked out getting the best loon in the business.”
