Breaking News: Costa Rica to Consider Adding Yellow Fever Vaccination to Official Immunization Schedule in January

The National Vaccination and Epidemiology Commission (CNVE) will evaluate the possibility of including the yellow fever vaccination in Costa Rica’s official immunization scheme during its next meeting, slated for the beginning of next year. This move comes on the heels of an announced extension of risk zones for yellow fever, which includes popular tourist destinations like Colombia.

Roberto Arroba, secretary of the CNVE, revealed this information to the press. He mentioned that this topic will be discussed internally among experts in the upcoming session. Arroba also hinted at the potential procurement of additional vaccine doses for the general population, making the vaccination accessible without cost, much like other routine immunizations in the country.

In anticipation of this potential inclusion, Costa Rica’s Ministry of Health will initiate yellow fever vaccinations free of charge starting next Thursday. The initial batch will consist of approximately 3,000 doses, prioritizing members of sporting delegations and individuals with scheduled trips to yellow fever risk zones between January and March 2025.

Mary Munive, Costa Rica’s Minister of Health and Vice President, emphasized the thorough scientific evaluation process that each vaccine must undergo before being considered for inclusion in the national immunization schedule. She used the example of the respiratory syncytial virus vaccine, which took extensive analysis before being approved for pregnant women and newborns.

The need for state intervention in providing the yellow fever vaccination arises from a recent scarcity in the private sector, resulting from the expanded yellow fever risk zones. This change has led to an increased demand for the vaccine among Costa Rican travelers.

As this story unfolds, Costa Rica’s health authorities are committed to ensuring the well-being of its citizens, both at home and abroad. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
