In the spirit of unity and compassion, a charity spinning marathon is set to take place in Alphen aan den Rijn at sportschool JAWI on February 2, 2025. This event is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a commitment to raise funds and awareness for research and understanding of Neuroendocrine Tumors (NET), a lesser-known form of cancer.

The mastermind behind this event is Katja Starrenburg, a NET cancer patient herself, who isn’t just fighting for her own future but also for the countless others affected by this disease. "I thought," she says, "I could either sit still or take action. Taking action is who I am."

Understanding NET Cancer

NET cancer arises from hormone-producing cells, often found in the digestive system, pancreas, or lungs. Despite affecting millions worldwide, it remains relatively unknown. There are two main types: functional NETs, which produce excess hormones, and nonfunctional NETs, which cause symptoms primarily through tumor growth and spread. Diagnosis is often delayed, with patients living with various symptoms like unintended weight loss, fatigue, and pain for years.

Katja, a devoted mother and wife, knows this all too well. For years, she battled digestive issues that were initially attributed to stress, lactose intolerance, or a spastic colon. However, in November 2023, a CT scan at the SEH revealed a NET cancer diagnosis, with tumors on her gut and liver.

Taking Action

After surgery at Erasmus MC, Katja receives monthly hormone injections to prevent further tumor growth. Despite her struggle, she remains optimistic, emphasizing, "I felt I could either be a passive patient or take action. Organizing this marathon felt like the right thing to do."

The Spinning Marathon for NET

Supported by the Erasmus Foundation and hosted by JAWI, the event aims to raise funds and educate the public about NET cancer. Participants can cycle for at least €20 per hour between 11:00 and 16:00. With over €4000 already raised, every hour on the bike brings NET cancer one step closer to the limelight.
