The Unsettling Mystery of Jeffrey Epstein’s New Mexico Ranch
Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender and former financier, owned properties worldwide. He regularly traveled between his Palm Beach estate, private Caribbean islands, a Paris apartment and the secluded Zorro Ranch in New Mexico.
While initial investigations into his crimes centered on Palm Beach, Florida, where victims first came forward, Epstein frequently transported young women across state and international lines, seemingly to evade scrutiny and maintain control.
A Fortress of Seclusion
For a long time, law enforcement focused on individual Epstein residences. However, as the FBI became involved, investigators discovered a vast network of properties, associates, and logistical support that allowed Epstein to continue his criminal activity for years with minimal oversight.
The Zorro Ranch, located on hundreds of acres surrounded by mountains and desert, included multiple residential buildings, stables, extensive pastureland, and a private airstrip for easy transport of people and materials.
Security was paramount, featuring fencing, a camera system, and strict personnel oversight, making Zorro one of Epstein’s most isolated properties. He purchased the ranch in 1993 from the family of Bruce King, a former three-term Democratic governor of New Mexico. The purchase included approximately 485 acres of state land leased for agricultural use.
Allegations of Abuse at Zorro Ranch
Testimony from multiple victims suggests sexual abuse occurred at the ranch. One woman, identified as Jane, testified in the trial of Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell, detailing a 1994 encounter after being introduced to Epstein and Maxwell through connections in Palm Beach. She described being brought to a room at the ranch and being sexually assaulted.
Annie Farmer, who also testified in Maxwell’s trial, alleged she received an intimate massage at the ranch at age 16 from a British socialite and former Epstein associate. She further testified that Epstein later entered her room and attempted to lie beside her, leaving her feeling paralyzed.
Limited Scrutiny and Ongoing Questions
Despite these allegations, the ranch remained largely unexamined by authorities. The New Mexico Attorney General initiated an investigation after Epstein’s 2019 arrest but was subsequently asked by federal prosecutors in New York to suspend further action, as they were already pursuing a multi-state criminal case.
The reasons for the delayed and limited scrutiny remain unclear. Contributing factors may include jurisdictional complexities, a focus on Florida and New York, and a lack of publicly available evidence specifically linking criminal activity to the ranch. Epstein’s 2008 non-prosecution agreement in Florida also created a perception that the case was largely closed.
Speculation and Calls for Investigation
Speculation surrounds Epstein’s connections to political, financial, and academic elites, with some suggesting authorities may have been reluctant to fully investigate for fear of exposing other influential individuals. The ranch’s proximity to areas associated with US nuclear research, including Los Alamos, has also fueled speculation.
Photographs have surfaced showing Epstein with figures like former New Mexico Governor Bruce King, the late French modeling agent Jean-Luc Brunel, linguist Noam Chomsky, and filmmaker Woody Allen.
Currently, New Mexico lawmakers are pushing for the creation of an investigative commission to determine what occurred at the ranch. The property, now renamed San Rafael, was sold to an undisclosed buyer in 2023.
