Jennifer Whiteside chosen as interim BC NDP leader

Jennifer Whiteside has been chosen as the new interim leader of the B.C. NDP following David Eby’s resignation after a weekend election defeat that reduced the party’s legislative caucus from 47 members down to 28. Whiteside announced the unanimous caucus recommendation on Thursday following a meeting at the legislature in Victoria, where Mike Farnworth was named house leader and Niki Sharma was named caucus chair.

B.C. NDP Caucus Reorganizes After Election Defeat

The party’s post-election reorganization follows a snap election call by outgoing Premier David Eby that resulted in a resounding defeat at the polls. According to initial counts, Eby’s majority government fell to 28 seats, leaving the B.C. NDP to serve as the Official Opposition to the B.C. Conservative Party, which secured a crushing two-thirds majority with 63 seats under Lorne Doerkson.

Whiteside, who was first elected as the MLA for New Westminster in October 2024 and subsequently re-elected in 2024 and 2026, said she was humbled by the caucus recommendation. It is not an outcome I was necessarily expecting, Whiteside said after the Thursday meeting, adding that Eby was not present either in person or virtually.

Did You Know? Jennifer Whiteside previously worked as the chief spokesperson and lead negotiator for the Hospital Employees’ Union before serving in provincial cabinet roles including Minister of Labour, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, and Minister of Education and Child Care.

Party faces hurdle to prove public financial trust

Speaking after the caucus meeting, Whiteside emphasized that the party understands the message sent by voters on Saturday. We are very focused on making sure that British Columbians understand that we are standing for them, that we have their backs, and we will continue to do that work in the opposition caucus, she stated.

Geoff Meggs, who served as chief of staff to late former NDP premier John Horgan, noted in an interview that the party’s next leadership faces a significant reputational hurdle in proving to taxpayers that the party can be trusted with public finances. Meggs pointed out that while Horgan left a $5.7-billion surplus when he stepped aside in 2022, subsequent government spending resulted in a record deficit forecast to reach $14 billion.
