Joe Miñoso Departs Chicago Fire After 15 Seasons as Joe Cruz

Joe Miñoso has departed NBC’s Chicago Fire after 15 seasons, marking the exit of an original cast member whose character, Joe Cruz, served as a cornerstone of Firehouse 51 since the series’ 2012 premiere. The character’s final appearance occurred in the milestone 300th episode, titled Three Hundred, which aired on November 4, 2026.

Cruz Leaves Firehouse 51 After Injury

The decision for Cruz to leave the firehouse followed a dramatic narrative arc in Season 15. After sustaining a severe spinal injury during a warehouse fire in the Season 14 finale, Cruz spent much of the current season in physical therapy. While his progress was notable—with Dr. Archer at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center noting his recovery—the physical toll of the job eventually prompted the character to prioritize his family, which includes his wife, Chloe, and their four children.

Incoming showrunner Victor Teran took the helm to execute a creative refresh. He opened a dialogue about how to handle the character’s exit.

This followed the departure of longtime executive producer Andrea Newman after 14 seasons. While initial discussions explored potential paths for the firefighter, the narrative ultimately centered on his recovery from a fractured spine suffered during the West Pershing warehouse blaze.

The conflict here is letting go of one family for another, instead of being able to have both, it’s a real, like, ‘You can’t have your cake and eat it, too,’ moment in Cruz’s life.

Joe Miñoso, actor

Miñoso, 48, noted that he learned of the creative direction for his character’s departure while filming the season.

Final Days at Firehouse 51

The final episode depicted Cruz deciding not to return to active duty at Firehouse 51 after realizing what his family needed most, effectively ending his tenure with the crew. Ahead of his formal departure, Battalion Chief Tomlin—played by Doug Savant—invited himself into the office of Squad Lieutenant Kelly Severide to discuss beginning the search for a replacement.

Joe’s been my right-hand man for the past almost a decade, and there’s a lot of time spent looking someone in the eye, telling the truth. It’s just an intimate relationship. So to have a scene where the art imitates life and vice versa… it was raw, it was real, and it was honest.

Taylor Kinney, actor

Cruz addressed his late friend’s memorial in a poignant moment outside the firehouse. He stated, I’ll be with you always, brother, before the crew gathered for a final group photo in dress blues.

Miñoso Reflects on Memories and Friendships

Throughout his 15 seasons on the show, Miñoso’s character evolved from a recurring guest star into a devoted best friend, husband, father, and leader.

For his part, Miñoso expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have portrayed the character since the show’s inception, noting the deep emotional connections formed with the cast and crew over the years. I take the memories and the friendships and the family, Miñoso said. I’ve loved it all, and I will continue to always love it. After the episode aired, the ensemble cast also posed for a final photo with Miñoso standing in the center.
