Joe Mulholland, former Managing Director of RTÉ Television, has died in Dublin at the age of 85 following a long illness.
A Life in Broadcasting
Born in 1940, Mr. Mulholland’s early life was shaped by his upbringing as the eldest of five children in Ballybofey, County Donegal. His father’s work as a construction worker often required extended periods away from home, leading the young Mr. Mulholland to take on significant family responsibilities.
After winning a scholarship to Finn College in Ballybofey, Mr. Mulholland pursued further education in London and Manchester before traveling to France in 1964 to study drama. It was in France that he met his future wife, Annie Vuillemin, and they married in Donegal in 1968.
Mr. Mulholland began his career with RTÉ in 1970, joining the first trainee TV producer/director course. He initially worked on Irish language programming, including the show Féach, and rose through the ranks to become Head of Current Affairs in 1980.

As Head of Current Affairs, Mr. Mulholland launched the award-winning program Today Tonight. The program became known for its impactful journalism, notably its investigation into the Stardust disaster, which prompted a tribunal of inquiry. He later served as Director of News, Manager/Controller of Programmes, and ultimately, Managing Director of Television.
