As the curtains close on 2024, we at "Latviešiem pasaulē" take a moment to reflect on another remarkable year filled with unity, cultural richness, and outstanding achievements by the global Latvian community. From celebrations and milestones to artistic pursuits and historical marksmanship, here’s a look back at some of the year’s most notable highlights.
Musical and Cultural Harmonies
The year kicked off with a symphony of notable anniversaries for Latvian choirs worldwide. The London Latvian Choir marked its 75th, while the Norwegian choir "Laipa," Frankfurt’s "Silava," Stockholm’s "Zibenītis," and Swiss Latvian TDK "Ramtai" celebrated their 10th. Meanwhile, the American Latvian Youth Association (ALJA) and US West Coast Latvian summer school "Kursa" both turned 50, and the global Latvian youth movement "2×2" celebrated its 60th anniversary.
Latvian music and dance took center stage at various international festivals. In Hamburg, Latvia was the honored partner country at the city’s annual port festival, drawing over 1.5 million visitors. The "Latvian Festival" ran for four days, showcasing Latvian diaspora talents in Germany. Meanwhile, the prestigious "Harmonie Festival 2024" in Limburg, Netherlands, welcomed over 300 choirs and folklore groups, including Latvia’s "Dudan" chorus from Minster and "Rudzupuķe" children’s folk dance group.
Closer to home, "Latviešiem pasaulē" joined Latvians from around the globe to celebrate summer solstice, or Jāņi, at the "Bērzes Strazdu Jāņu Festivāls" in England’s Strait of Berosus. Later in the year, the XVI Latvian Song and Dance Festival in Canada united singers and dancers from all corners of the earth.
The Magic of Latvian Theatre
Theatre enthusiasts around the world were treated to a feast of Latvian drama in 2024. The brainchild of BRNN’s Ieva Cirule, the "Dāvana Latvijai" festival in Latvia showcased the best of Latvian diaspora theatre, with performances by groups from Denmark, England, Ireland, Norway, and Sweden gracing the VEF Culture Palace stage.
The latvian diaspora’s theatrical prowess shone once again at the PLATS Solis festival in Stockholm, where 25 amateur theatre groups from Europe, America, and Australia came together to celebrate the art form. Meanwhile, theracycline spirit of the festival was bottled and shared with listeners of LR2 radio throughout the year.
Further notable theatrical events included the "Between 5 Seas" festival in Birmingam, featuring performances by groups from London, Birmingam, "Saime" Theatre Studio, and Slietas Latvian Theatre in Ireland. These global gatherings of Latvian theatre enthusiasts further cemented theatre’s status as a vital bond linking Latvians across the globe.
Historical Milestones and Patriotism
"Latviešiem pasaulē" was present as the global Latvian community marked significant historical milestones. In May, Latvians worldwide commemorated the 107th anniversary of the Latvian Proclamation of Independence, and in November, the 103rd anniversary of the Latvian Republic. Alongside these celebrations, the path of the Baltic Way was retraced in Gotland, Sweden, marking 30 years since the historic demonstration.
The People’s Account for Latvia Abroad (PBLA) conference in Riga, dedicated to Latvia’s path to NATO membership, brought together Latvian organization leaders from around the world. The event highlighted the crucial role played by the Latvian diaspora in the country’s recent history.
A Musical Homecoming
As the year draws to a close, "Latviešiem pasaulē" is thrilled to announce an exclusive musical treat for our listeners – a world premiere by none other than Latvian musical legend, Sandija Ozoliņa. Now based in the United States, Ozoliņa has delighted audiences worldwide with her powerful voice andensive stage presence. LR2 listeners will be the first to hear her duettaste alongside her granddaughter in a brand new track, sure to become an instant classic.
With this musical highlight, we at "Latviešiem pasaulē" bring the curtain down on 2024, celebrating another year of unity, cultural richness, and outstanding achievements among the global Latvian community.
