Koei Tecmo Waited for Anime’s End to Greenlight Attack on Titan 3

Scheduled for a December 10, 2026 release, Attack on Titan 3 departs from its predecessors by adapting Hajime Isayama’s entire anime story from beginning to end while casting players as an original traumatized character rather than a central series hero.

Koei Tecmo Delays Adaptation Until the Anime’s Conclusion

Earlier entries in the gaming franchise hit the market while Hajime Isayama’s anime series was still actively in production, forcing developers to restrict their scope. The first game covered only the opening season, and the second added the second season alongside a non-canonical ending. According to development producer Hideo Suzuki, the team at Koei Tecmo deliberately waited until the entire show wrapped up before greenlighting the third installment.

If we just picked up at those new seasons of the anime, it wasn’t good enough as a game, as a volume, and as a product, Suzuki told IGN. That’s also when we found out that anime was coming in the end. So we were like, Well, we might as well just wait and cover everything from the beginning to end, and that’s got to be more satisfactory to the fans.

Attack on Titan 3: The Final Preview

While the game carries a numerical title, it functions less as a direct sequel and more as an expansive retelling of the entire saga. The title has earned an ESRB rating of Mature 17+ for violence, blood and gore, partial nudity, and language.

Playing as an Original Engineering Prodigy with a Traumatic Backstory

Instead of stepping directly into the boots of Eren Jaeger or Mikasa Ackerman at the outset, players step into the shoes of a custom-created character. This protagonist belongs to an earlier generation of soldiers, similar to the one that produced Levi Ackerman and Zoë Hange.

Omega Force Refines ODM Movement and Titan Combat Mechanics

Developer Omega Force revamped the signature ODM gear movement to bridge the gap between casual players and veterans looking for a stiffer challenge. Players can anchor themselves directly to buildings or trees, precisely manage flight altitude, and slide underneath architectural arches.

While smaller four-meter class Titans fall to quick strikes against their napes, larger foes and special targets require tactical patience. During preview sessions, players faced off against the Warhammer Titan, requiring them to zip around and chip away at it bit by bit. During the high-stakes Raid on Liberio, players utilize Thunderspears to battle the Nine Titans, going head-to-head against Pieck’s Cart Titan, Porco’s Jaw Titan, Zeke’s Beast Titan, and the Tybur family’s War Hammer Titan.

Tea Parties and Mess Halls Provide Camp Downtime Between Battles

Between brutal skirmishes against colossal threats, the title introduces camp activities designed to foster interpersonal bonds. Game director Hayato Iwata utilized Koei Tecmo’s experience with the Fire Emblem franchise to adapt a social minigame style into the experience.

There are many ways that the player can build a friendship with anime characters, and one of them is giving gifts to them.
