Last-Minute grocery rush: Simple meals take center stage this New Year’s Eve

The clock is ticking, and so are the footsteps of last-minute shoppers seeking final ingredients for their New Year’s Eve celebrations. Tradition holds sway as revellers opt for hassle-free indulgence, favoring snacks, gourmet fondue sets, and sparkling wines.

In the bustling aisles of Carrefour Market in Kortenberg, shoppers hurry to check off their lists. "Today’s the day for my last-minute shopping," a client shares, "so everything stays fresh and delicious." In typical New Year’s Eve fashion, many prefer straightforward dishes, having had their fill of culinary marathons over the holiday season.

The store’s offerings reflect this trend. "We’re seeing a lot of interest in gourmet and fondue sets, along with baked goods, champagne, and cava," reveals Karin Lissens, the store’s supervisor. "Small bites, especially, remain a big hit," she adds.

Back home, plans are equally uncomplicated. One customer shares, "We’ve got meat for the grill tonight, with croquettes on the side." Many others are content to spend the evening in, with a simple yet satisfying pasta or a cosy fondue night.

As the ball drops, it seems, Less is More. "We’re having a quiet New Year’s at home," another shopper reveals, "with a nice snack and a pasta dish with crayfish."

Yet, opinions differ. While some cherish the simplicity, others can’t resist the allure of a lively celebration. Regardless, one thing’s clear: the gateaux and bubbly will keep spirits high, and the mood, festive. Welcome, 2023!
