Mexico Launches Olinia, an Affordable Electric Vehicle Company
In a bid to promote sustainable transportation and reduce fuel emissions, the Mexican government has announced the creation of Olinia, an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing company with both state and private capital. The first three models are set to debut at the World Cup’s inaugural match in 2026 at the iconic Estadio Azteca.
Olinia is a public-private partnership initiative spearheaded by the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation. The federal government has committed an investment of 25 million pesos to the project.
The vehicles, tailored for urban mobility, will range in price from 90,000 to 150,000 pesos ($4,500 – $7,500 USD), making them accessible to a broader segment of the population. Roberto Capuano Tripp, the project lead, notes that current EVs in Mexico are expensive and out of reach for most families, but Olinia aims to change that.
Three models are planned: one for personal use, another for neighborhood commuting, and a third for last-mile delivery services. The company will achieve this by developing a multipurpose modular platform for the three models, sharing components like the chassis, motor, and battery to reduce costs.
Olinia’s mission aligns with Mexico’s transition towards cleaner energy and more sustainable urban mobility. Its compact size optimizes space usage in sprawling urban areas while reducing fuel emissions. By launching the first model at the World Cup, Mexico aims to highlight its commitment to eco-friendly initiatives on the global stage.
