Canada’s Leylah Fernandez advanced to the semifinals of the Singapore Tennis Open with a 6-2, 7-5 upset of top seed Mirra Andreeva on Friday, marking her second victory over the Russian player in two months according to The Canadian Press. The latest victory gives Fernandez a 3-2 edge in her career head-to-head series against Andreeva. All three of the Canadian’s wins against the Russian have come on hardcourts. The sixth-seeded Fernandez previously defeated Andreeva in straight sets during the third round of the National Bank Open in Toronto over the summer.
Friday’s win also marks the ninth career victory for the 24-year-old against a top-10 opponent. Andreeva entered the Singapore tournament as the heavy favorite and the only top-10 player in the draw, following a standout season that included her first career Grand Slam title at the French Open and quarterfinal runs at Wimbledon and the US Open.
Semifinal Showdown in Singapore
Fernandez will face fifth seed Maja Chwalinska of Poland in the semifinals on Saturday. This marks the first semifinal appearance of the season for Fernandez, who holds five career WTA titles consisting of four WTA 250 events and a WTA 500 win at the 2025 Mubadala DC Open.
Chwalinska advanced to the Singapore semifinals following a victory over defending champion Elise Mertens. Saturday’s match will be the first meeting between Fernandez and Chwalinska on the WTA Tour.
