Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges Amid Climate Goals
In a landmark report released today, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) highlights that renewable energy capacity additions reached record levels in 2023, with solar and wind power leading the charge. The agency states that over new energy capacity installed globally last year came from renewable sources, marking a significant shift away from fossil fuels.
“The transition to renewables is accelerating faster than ever,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. “We are witnessing a historic shift in the global energy landscape, driven by falling costs, policy commitments, and growing public demand for clean energy.”

According to the report, solar photovoltaic (PV) installations alone accounted for of all new renewable capacity added in 2023. IRENA projects that by 2030, renewables could supply of global electricity demand, up from around 30% today.
The data comes as governments worldwide ramp up climate pledges ahead of the upcoming COP29 summit. The European Union, for instance, aims to achieve at least 45% of its energy from renewables by 2030, while China and the United States have both announced ambitious expansion targets for wind and solar farms.
However, challenges remain. The report notes that many developing nations still lack sufficient infrastructure to integrate large-scale renewables into their grids. “While progress is impressive, we must ensure equitable access to clean energy technologies,” La Camera added.
IRENA’s findings align with recent trends in the energy sector, where battery storage costs have dropped in the past decade, making renewable energy systems more viable. The agency calls for continued investment in grid modernization and energy storage to support the transition.
