Havoc on Dutch Highway: Police, Rescuers Chase escaping Dog for Hours

A Sunday afternoon drive on the A17 near Moerdijk turned into an unexpected chase when a dog escaped its leash and led authorities on a wild goose chase across the highway. The incident, which lasted over an hour, resulted in the closure of the highway and a massive response from emergency services.

The drama began when the dog, whose owner had parked on the shoulder to try and catch it, managed to elude capture. The concerned owner attempted to pursue the animal, sparking a series of reports to the emergency hotline. Multiple rescue services, including police and Rijkswaterstaat, were deployed to assist in recapturing the frightened pet.

As the chase intensified, so did the response. A small army of rescue personnel trekked across the highway’s emergency lane in pursuit of the agile canine. However, the dog proved to be a wily adversary, repeatedly dodging capture.

In a bid to ensure the safety of both the dog and the public, police made the decision to close down the A17. The pursuit continued, with the four-legged fugitive showing no signs of giving up.

Finally, after around 30 minutes, a police officer managed to lure the hungry dog in with some dog food. The canine, seemingly exhausted and hungry, approached the officer, allowing for a safe capture.

With the dog secured, the highway was reopened, and traffic returned to normal. Authorities later revealed that the dog had been reported missing in Zevenbergschen Hoek, but how it ended up on the highway remains a mystery.
