Article:

NASA’s Perseverance rover has touched down on the Martian surface, marking another historic achievement in humanity’s quest to explore the red planet. The agency’s most advanced astrobiology laboratory is now ready to search for signs of ancient microbial life and collect samples of rock and regolith (broken rock and soil) to send back to Earth.

Perseverance entered Mars’ atmosphere at over 12,000 mph (19,300 km/h) and descended gently using retrorockets, a parachute, and a crushable body to slow its descent. It’s the ninth time NASA has landed a rover on the Martian surface, and by far the most technologically advanced.

The rover will spend its two-year mission exploring Jezero Crater, a former lake bed that scientists believe could have harbored life millions of years ago. It will use its suite of seven advanced instruments to analyze the composition of the Martian surface, scope out potential landing sites for future crewed missions, and even make oxygen from the Martian atmosphere.

"Today’s success brings with it so much joy and relief," said NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine. "But it also brings with it a responsibility to continue pushing the boundaries of space exploration, because that’s what we do."
