Arson Suspected in Fatal Sofiya Central Station Fire; Two Suspects Detained

A massive fire at Sofiya’s Central Station has claimed the lives of four people and left two others severely injured, prompting joint investigation efforts from the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office and the State Agency for National Security (SANS). Arson is suspected, with two individuals, both leading a vagrant lifestyle and with extensive criminal records, detained in connection with the incident.

Investigators believe the fire may have been sparked in the midst of a dispute between homeless individuals squatting in the train cars. "It’s possible that one of them intentionally set fire to the wagon due to a dispute," suggested Ivo Iliev, Deputy Sofia City Prosecutor. If convicted, the perpetrator could face imprisonment for up to 15 years under Bulgarian law.

Autopsies and DNA tests are underway to identify the victims and will be completed by January 2. Authorities are exploring all potential causes, both intentional and accidental, and encourage anyone with information to come forward.

The incident took place around 10 PM, with signals initially received by Bansko District Firefighters. Nine individuals were present in the affected wagon and surrounding vehicles at the time of the fire, which is alleged to have been started by a dispute. Worryingly, those forced into the train cars can easily unlock their temporary cells with standard keys.

As the investigation into this tragic event continues, Sofiya’s Central Station serves as a painful reminder of the city’s mounting homelessness and poverty issues. Authorities and concerned citizens alike hope that justice will prevail for the victims and their loved ones.
