Article:
A boy born at Akershus University Hospital in Lørenskog at precisely one minute past midnight on New Year’s Day is currently leading the competition for the title of Norway’s first baby of the year.
The boy, who has not yet been named, is the current front-runner in the annual tradition of tracking the first babies born in Norway at the start of the new year.
Trailing close behind the Lørenskog arrival is a girl born at Bærum Hospital two minutes after midnight, aiming for the silver medal in this unique race.
In third place is a boy born at Drammen Hospital eight minutes and four seconds after the stroke of midnight.
"He’s doing well, and everything is proceeding as expected with both mother and child," stated Hege Frostad Dahle, communications chief at Vestre Viken Hospital Trust.
Meanwhile, the first baby of the year in the capital was a girl born at Ullevål Hospital ten minutes into 2025.
In Oslo, a set of twins, Eliva and Elliot, arrived at the University Hospital of Northern Norway (UNN) at 01:06 AM, claiming the title of the first newborns in the country this year.
At St. Olavs Hospital in Trondheim, a boy was delivered via emergency caesarean section at 00:33 AM, with both mother and child reported to be doing well.
Skien Hospital in Telemark welcomed a girl to the world at 00:49 AM, securing a sixth place nationally but claiming the top spot locally.
No New Year’s babies were reported in Agder, with no deliveries expected at Arendal, Flekkefjord, or Kristiansand hospitals.
On average, around 150 children are born daily in Norway. Assuming births are evenly distributed throughout the day, this would translate to roughly six babies per hour.
With approximately 5.3 million inhabitants, Norway’s population is expected to grow by roughly 4,000 people in 2025, primarily driven by international immigration and births outnumbering deaths.
