Babies exposed to less sugar before and after birth face lower risks of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and anxiety decades later, according to a study published in npj Aging. Researchers analyzing health data from UK Biobank participants found that individuals whose first 1,000 days coincided with sugar rationing experienced a significantly reduced incidence of these conditions compared to those born after rationing ended.
Postwar Sugar Rationing as a Natural Experiment
During and after World War II, the UK strictly rationed sugar. Adult allowances aligned closely with current dietary recommendations, while children under two received no separate sugar allowance. When rationing ended in September 1953, average adult sugar consumption nearly doubled from roughly 41 to 80 grams per day, and children’s candy consumption more than doubled.
This abrupt shift created a rare natural experiment. Researchers compared people who spent their earliest years under rationing with those born shortly after restrictions lifted. Researchers in China analyzed health data from 60,394 UK Biobank participants born between 1951 and 1956 to evaluate long-term health outcomes.
Quantifying the Reduced Risk of Dementia and Alzheimer’s
Participants whose first 1,000 days coincided with sugar restrictions showed a 27 percent lower risk of developing dementia from any cause, according to the study findings. Furthermore, they exhibited a 46 percent lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers also noted an 11 percent lower risk of depression and a 20 percent lower risk of anxiety among this group, though no similar association emerged for Parkinson’s disease.
The protective associations proved strongest when rationing continued after birth. Exposure limited solely to the uterus produced few clear differences, aside from a lower risk of anxiety. “We believe the lasting protective effect is rooted in metabolic programming during the first 1,000 days – a critical window when the brain undergoes rapid development and is highly sensitive to nutritional cues,” senior author Bing Zhang, a geriatric medicine researcher at Guangzhou Medical University, told ScienceAlert.

Bing Zhang noted that these larger regional volumes could grant the brain enhanced capacity to withstand age-related changes. A separate 2017 study published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia similarly connected higher sugary drink consumption with lower total brain volume and poorer episodic memory, though observational designs could not prove direct cause and effect.
Metabolic health and inflammation likely play mediating roles. “Early high sugar intake predisposes to insulin resistance and chronic low-grade inflammation, both of which are well-established risk factors for dementia,” Zhang explains. While the current study did not directly test these mechanisms, the findings highlight the potential value of limiting added sugar during pregnancy and infancy.
