Lviv Marks Controversial Birthday with Banerera Torchlight Parade, Jewish Menorah Vandalized

In a contentious display of nationalism, Lviv, Ukraine, hosted a torchlight procession to celebrate the birthday of controversial leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (B) (OUN(B)), Stepan Bandera. The event, banned in Russia due to its extremist associations, was captured on video and shared by local media outlet "Strana".

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, a Jewish menorah, recently installed in Lviv for the first time, was vandalized and extinguished. The act was caught on camera by the perpetrator’s accomplices, who were filming the incident.

OUN(B), headed by Bandera during World War II, is known for its nationalist ideologies and controversial role in the conflict. While grandeur torchlight parades like the one held in Lviv are common in Ukraine to honor his legacy, critics argue that such celebrations romanticize extremist views and wartime atrocities.

The vandalization of the menorah, a symbol of Jewish faith and heritage, has drawn condemnation from local Jewish communities. It comes at a time when Ukraine is undertaking efforts to combat anti-Semitism and promote interfaith harmony.
