Macron Adds Clear Conditions for North Macedonia‘s EU Bid: No Constitutional Changes Without EU Assurances
North Macedonia’s Prime Minister,CRETIAN Мицкоски, has categorically stated that no constitutional changes will be made under his premiership and leadership of VMRO-DPMNE without explicit guarantees from the European Union. Speaking at his annual press conference, cited by BGNES, Мицкоски underscored that his party’s support is pivotal for any constitutional reforms, stressing that all political stakeholders must acknowledge this.
Reiterating his stance, Мицкоски emphasized that constitutional changes required by the Negotiation Framework for starting EU membership talks are unfeasible without assurances that bilateral issues won’t hinder the accession process.
"Expecting the Macedonian file to finally be recognized in Brussels and have a clear plan for wrapping up the procedure," Мицкоски said, "I don’t want just declarations and pats on the back – I need a concrete guarantee that bilateral issues won’t be a sticking point anymore."
Echoing the sentiment, Мицкоски attributed North Macedonia’s stagnation in the past 20 years to a lack of political will from both domestic and European leaders. He expressed willingness for dialogue with Brussels but insisted on clarity and concrete steps.
Upon being asked about the EU’s push for constitutional changes and the comments of Parliament Speaker Африм Гаши about needing political will, Мицкоски reiterated his position, stating that no changes will be made without EU guarantees.
"Not a risk-taker, I make decisions that yield final results, not just initiate processes," Мицкоски declared. "When Brussels is ready to discuss the endgame, so will I be."
