Machine Gun Kelly Attends Lil Durk Federal Trial in Los Angeles

Machine Gun Kelly made an unexpected appearance in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom on Monday, August 24, 2026, sitting in an overflow room to listen to the federal murder-for-hire trial of Lil Durk, who faces charges stemming from a deadly 2022 shooting.

The high-profile legal proceedings kicked off with jurors hearing opening arguments in a case that AllHipHop reported centres on a deadly 2022 ambush in Los Angeles. Machine Gun Kelly showed up at the downtown Los Angeles court to listen in on the proceedings. Though the appearance caught observers by surprise, the two artists share a history. MGK joined Durk onstage during a 2023 Amazon Music Live performance in Los Angeles, playing guitar while Durk performed The Voice.

Federal Prosecutors Target Alleged Revenge Plot Tied to King Von’s Death

Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Weiner laid out the government’s case during Monday’s opening statements, telling jurors that Durk became consumed with revenge following the November 2020 fatal shooting of his friend and fellow rapper King Von outside an Atlanta hookah lounge. Prosecutors told the court that the case is about murder rather than music, detailing an alleged plan to stalk, hunt and kill rival rapper Quando Rondo.

According to federal investigators, five men flew west from Chicago on August 18, 2022, after associates learned Quando Rondo was staying in Los Angeles. Authorities allege that the group shadowed Quando Rondo around Los Angeles before gunmen attacked near the Beverly Center and fired more than a dozen shots. While Quando Rondo survived the barrage, his cousin, Saviay’a Lul Pab Robinson, was killed in the attack.

Defense Strategy Pushes Back on Government Evidence and Music Use

Defense attorney Marissa Goldberg countered the government’s narrative by placing responsibility on Kavon Cuz Grant, the former personal assistant now cooperating with federal prosecutors. You’ll realize there’s no evidence against Durk, Goldberg told the jury, asserting that he had nothing to do with it.

The defense also pushed against the government’s planned use of Durk’s music by telling jurors his songs are art. This is what he does for a living. Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, has pleaded not guilty to charges including murder-for-hire resulting in death, stalking-related counts and a firearms charge tied to the shooting.

Financial Trails, Separate Racketeering Charges, and Trial Outlook

The Justice Department alleges that OTF-linked funds covered flights and lodging, while a credit card linked to Durk was used during the operation. Prosecutors also cited a message from Durk’s phone telling an associate, Don’t book no flights under no names involved wit me.

The current proceeding excludes later racketeering allegations, after Judge Michael Fitzgerald ordered those accusations to be tried separately. Prosecutors say the Grammy-winning Chicago rapper faces a mandatory life sentence if jurors convict him on every count in this trial.

The trial is expected to continue for at least three weeks, with prosecutors beginning to call witnesses after Monday’s opening statements.
