Title: Exuberant Ice Swimming Ritual Kicks Off in Kalofar on Epiphany

In the chill of the morning, enthusiasts in Kalofar started their Epiphany tradition with an energetic bang. The annual ‘Malo Clim’ (‘Little Swan’) ice swimming event began with spirited dancing, traditional pipe music played on gaidias (Bulgarian bagpipes), and a vibrant atmosphere that promised a day of camaraderie and festivity.

This year, Father Dimitri blessed not only the Epiphany Cross, but also the waters of the Tundzha River, a first in Kalofar’s festive history.

"Ice swimming is a community event that everyone enjoys," said former Kalofar mayor Rumiana Stoyanova, speaking on Nova Televizia’s "Good morning, Bulgaria" show.

As the clock struck 8:00 AM, the ice on the river shattered, signaling the start of the traditional procession into the chilly waters. The Epiphany Cross was retrieved by one of the young men and passed on to the youngest participant, 3-year-old Miroslav.

True to its name, Bulgaria’s ‘Little Swan’ event spreads joy and unity among its participants, marking another memorable Epiphany celebration in Kalofar.
