Tragic Discovery in Mannheim: 19-Year-Vintage Woman Found Dead, 17-Year-Old in Custody. A woman’s body was discovered in a wooded area on the northeastern outskirts of Mannheim on Wednesday morning. Authorities have confirmed the woman, 19 years old, was the victim of a violent crime.
Initial investigations and preliminary results from the medical examiner confirmed suspicions of foul play. A 17-year-old male was taken into custody Wednesday evening and is considered a “prime suspect,” according to police.
Police Initially Suspected a Crime
Police were already operating under the assumption of a crime on Wednesday. Police spokesperson Michael Klump stated that, “based on the situation in which she was found, a violent act against her cannot currently be ruled out.” This has now been confirmed: “Initial investigations and the preliminary findings of the legal medicine confirm the suspicion that the woman became the victim of a violent act.”
A passerby discovered the body around 8:00 AM on Wednesday near the Karlstern. Police have not yet released the identity of the deceased. The forest area was cordoned off, and forensic technicians collected evidence from the scene. The Heidelberg forensic medicine team (Baden-Württemberg) was also involved.
The Heidelberg Criminal Police Directorate established a special commission with approximately 60 officers. As part of the intensive investigation, a 17-year-old was taken into preliminary custody Wednesday evening.
Victim and Suspect Had a Relationship
The 17-year-old had been in a relationship with the 19-year-old woman for over a year. According to the Mannheim Public Prosecutor’s Office, he met with the woman Tuesday evening and they subsequently went together to the Karlstern. It was there, around 0:30 AM on Wednesday, that he allegedly attacked her although she was unsuspecting and unable to defend herself. He then allegedly used his hands and, possibly, a branch to kill her.
On the request of the Mannheim Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Mannheim District Court issued an arrest warrant against the 17-year-old on suspicion of murder. He was presented to the investigating judge at the Mannheim District Court on Thursday afternoon. After the arrest warrant was opened, he was taken into custody in a correctional facility.
