Argentina: Official Deputy Denounces Traffic Agents for Alleged Violation of International Obligations in Diplomatic Incident
An official deputy from La Libertad Avanza (LLA), Marcela Pagano, has spoken out regarding the incident involving two Russian drivers who barricaded themselves in diplomatic vehicles after refusing to undergo a breathalyzer test. The lawmaker announced that she will present a criminal complaint against the traffic agents, accusing them of violating international obligations by not respecting the special status of diplomatic missions in Argentina.
“I will file a criminal complaint to investigate the conduct of the traffic agents and determine the responsibilities of the department”, Pagano announced via her X account. In a series of statements, the deputy emphasized that both diplomatic and consular agents are bound by an international convention, of which Argentina is a signatory, giving them special status in all signatory countries.
Pagano stressed that, according to the convention, diplomatic vehicles cannot be subject to search, and they are also not subject to the jurisdiction of local judicial and administrative authorities, including traffic checks. She criticized the actions of the traffic agents who retained the two men driving Russian diplomatic vehicles and refused to take a breathalyzer test.
“It is worrying that the traffic controls in Buenos Aires are violating international obligations of the Argentine State. Just as we demand other nations to respect our diplomatic missions abroad, we must respect those accredited in our country”, Pagano concluded.
These statements come amidst the ongoing debate about the extent to which representatives of other countries must obey Argentine laws, following Russia’s diplomatic Mission’s accusation of a "grave violation of international law."
