Mozambique in Turmoil: Election Violence and Prison Break Claims Lives, Sparks Widespread Unrest

Mozambique is grappling with a wave of violence and unrest following its general elections, with clashes between rival groups leaving at least 33 people dead and leading to mass prison escapes.

A week after the hotly contested polls, which saw the ruling Frelimo party secure a fourth term, unrest has swept through the southern African country. The primary flashpoint has been the city of Xai-Xai, where at least 15 people were killed in clashes between opposition supporters and police.

Opposition parties have accused Frelimo of fraud and are calling for the results to be annulled. Frelimo, however, maintains that the vote was fair and transparent.

As the political standoff escalated, prisoners seeking to capitalize on the chaos broke out of the maximum-security prison in the provincial capital of Nampula on Wednesday. Approximately 1,500 inmates secured their freedom, while prison staff frantically tried to regain control.

The escape has compounded the chaos gripping the country, with authorities scrambling to recapture the fugitives and restore order. Neighboring countries have expressed concern and offered support to Mozambique in the face of the escalating crisis.

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has called for calm, urging citizens to respect the outcome of the elections and to engage in dialogue to resolve any grievances. However, with both sides dug in and tensions reaching boiling point, a swift resolution to the crisis seems uncertain.
