Ukraine‘s Population in 2024: An Estimate
The exact population of Ukraine in 2024 remains elusive due to the challenge of accurate counting. However, estimates suggest it could be around 34 million people, slightly more than the current figure.
Alexander Gλαдун, deputy director of the Institute of Demography and Human Quality of Life, shared this approximate number in an interview with Ukrainian Radio. He noted the difficulties in obtaining reliable statistics due to the ongoing conflict and the lack of data from certain regions.
"Currently, normal statistical accounting is practically impossible. We rely on data from the State Statistics Service, as well as the Border Guard Service and the Ministry of Justice for data on births and deaths. However, these registers only cover the controlled territories, making it hard to achieve maximum accuracy," Gладун explained.
Historical Context and Current Figures
Looking back to 1991, Ukraine had an estimated population of 52 million. Its peak was reached in 1993, with a population of 52.2 million. However, due to conflict and other factors, this number has significantly decreased.
By the start of 2022, the population within the 1991 borders was around 42 million, representing a decrease of 10 million people over the past three decades.
Demographic Challenges Ahead

Government projections suggest the population could decrease to 25 million by 2040, though some experts caution that this scenario may still be optimistic.
In occupied territories, Russia’s influence is also altering the demographic picture. In Crimea, for example, over 35% of its residents have been "replaced" by Russian citizens since the annexation.
