In a show of unity and defiance, opposition figures and Venezuelan expatriates came together in Argentina to voice their support for change in their home country.
María Corina Machado, Venezuelan politician and human rights activist, publicly expressed her gratitude to Argentine lawmaker Javier Milei for receiving Edmundo González Urrutia, a prominent member of the Venezuelan opposition. Their meeting, which took place at Milei’s parliamentary office, offered a glimmer of hope for a resolution to the ongoing crisis in Venezuela.
‘Viva la libertad y el bravo pueblo’ (Long live freedom and the brave people), Machado proclaimed, as she praised Milei’s commitment to the cause. Milei, known for his libertarian views and advocacy for human rights, has been a steadfast ally of the Venezuelan opposition.
González Urrutia, who is recognized as the legitimate president of Venezuela by a significant portion of the international community, echoed Machado’s sentiments. Following his meeting with Milei, he affirmed his intention to return to Venezuela and assume his rightful position as the country’s leader.
My intention is to go to Venezuela and take possession of the mandate given to me by the National Assembly, González Urrutia stated, underscoring the democratic process that led to his recognition as the interim president.
The spirit of defiance also extended to the streets of Buenos Aires, where hundreds of Venezuelans took to the Plaza de Mayo to demonstrate their support for González Urrutia and the cause of democratization in Venezuela. The rally, which drew a diverse crowd of expatriates, unity symbols, and pro-democracy slogans, served as a poignant reminder of the struggle for freedom happening in Venezuela.
Milei and González Urrutia also shared a moment of solidarity with the demonstrators, greeting them from the balcony of the Casa Rosada, Argentina’s presidential palace.
