The freezing temperatures caused a significant drop in road conditions, with the KNMI issuing code geel, warning of ice formation between 4 and 10 a.m.
In Tilburg, the Beelaerts van Bloklandstraat fietspad transformed into a veritable ice skating rink. Tenant Spanje fire brigade reported that tens of cyclists, scooter riders, and even fatbikers fell victim to the slippery conditions. Despite salt being spread, several more accidents occurred.
Across the province in Breda, the intersection of Overakkerstraat and Trompenburgstraat also proved treacherous. A scooter rider sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Warm-up before cycling advised
Wijkagenten across the region took to social media to warn of poor road conditions, with Leijdeal police urging motorists to be cautious. They advised cyclists to warm up their tires and alter their riding style to suit the road conditions.
